Auchentoshan was constructed in the year 1800. It passed through several owners before being purchased by Eadie Cairns in 1969, who completely rebuilt it. Auchentoshan distillery is a single malt whisky distillery in the west of Scotland.
Auchentoshan comes from the Gaelic "Achadh an Oisein", which means "corner of the field." Due to its proximity to Glasgow, the distillery is also known as "Glasgow's Malt Whisky" and "the Breakfast Whisky" due to its sweet and delicate nature.
Auchentoshan was sold by Cairns to Morrison Bowmore Distillers in 1984. Morrison Bowmore was acquired by Suntory in 1989. They bought all of the company's assets in 1994.
In May of that year, Beam Inc. and Suntory Holdings Limited merged in May 2014 to form Beam Suntory Inc, which now owns Auchentoshan and other Morrison Bowmore assets. Auchentoshan is on the outskirts of Clydebank in West Dunbartonshire, near the Erskine Bridge, at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills.
Along with Bladnoch, Glenkinchie, and, more recently, Daftmill Distillery, Annandale Distillery, and Ailsa Bay Distillery, it is one of six malt whisky distilleries in the Scottish Lowlands.
Why is Auchentoshan Distillery a great choice?
Auchentoshan distillery is quite a light dram. The structure is excellent, and the whisky as a whole is very appealing. The barley is well-presented, and the structure is well-constructed around it, with grape fruitiness, nuttiness, and earthiness.
It tastes lightly fruity and light, almost like brandy. With lots of apple seeds, toasted almonds, vanilla, and grape, it's nutty and fruity. There's a hint of dried fruit, but it's more like the smell of raisins in bread when combined with the grain.
The barley shines through, and you could even say it's brilliant. When it comes to taste it is lightly sweet. Before the richness builds and some dense, slightly earthy malt takes command with a dose of vanilla, the richness builds.
The dense, slightly earthy, and nutty barley in the middle will undoubtedly appeal to you. It intensifies the whisky's flavor as it gradually unfolds, leaving you with a hint of almond. It's light, to the point where the alcohol comes through too strongly at times. Warming, satisfying, and with a good level of flavor.
The malt is well-controlled, and it's slightly drying, with good length and hints of oak and apple seeds, vanilla, and light toffee. The dryness can make your mouth feel a little empty, similar to the sensation you get after drinking carbonated water. The barley also retains its earthy flavor, which is pleasant.
