Brief Story of Captain Morgan Rum

In 1944, the Seagram Company, based in Canada, started producing rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company. The Jamaican government sold Seagram CEO Samuel Bronfman a distillery called Long Pond. 

A Kingston pharmacy called Levy Brothers was one among the purchasers of raw rum from the Long Pond distillery. The Levy family had been buying raw rum, blending it with medical herbs and spices, aging it, and bottling it. Bronfman was impressed with the rum product and purchased the rights to it. 

Rum was exceedingly powerful, and in certain cases, too strong for the general people to drink, so spices were added to soften it up.

The Long Pond distillery was purchased from the Jamaican government in 1944 by the Seagram Company, which was controlled by Samuel Bronfman, and one of the purchasers was a family known as the Levys, who bought raw rum and added herbs and spices to it. Samuel loved the concept and purchased the rum's rights.

He dubbed the rum Captain Morgan and constructed larger distilleries in San Juan. Due to tax restrictions, he had to sell the distillery in Puerto Rico, but he permitted the firm to use Captain Morgan under license.
