Jim Beam Devil’s Cut Whisky is another bourbon from the Jim Beam family, but this one has a unique twist. This bourbon’s modified trait is that not all of the bourbon in the blend comes from what’s normally poured out of the barrel, some of it comes from bourbon extracted from the barrel itself.
Jim Beam’s normal bourbon gets a wicked twist by combining their 6-year-old whiskey with liquid taken from the cask’s wood, where it’s soaked in over the years of maturation. This results in a bourbon that is powerful and weighty, with a lovely addition of woody richness. Jim Beam Devil’s Cut is wintergreen and mint dominate, with wood, honey, orange rind, and a hint of sour corn mash thrown in for good measure.
There is some sweetness, but it’s primarily minty from the rye. When it comes to taste it’s nothing like it smells and this is definitely a woody drink, and it is an interesting experiment in what can be achieved through wood extraction. This whisky is great when shared with others, just like its younger brother, the original Jim Beam.
